The Renegade Line

I studied the drawings of Matisse, one of my favorite artists and I am always surprised what a simple line on a paper can do. His pencil goes around the eyebrows, the iris, then the nose, the lips, and the mouth. A “ visage” is born with character, attitude, and with a smile or tears. A stroke of black ink on a white sheet of paper could divide, unite, and give life to a face, a body, or a landscape.

That is the essence of creating art, isn’t it?

But what if,

this same line found its own power, deciding to have a life by itself. A renegade line that decides to be larger here, curvy for a while, and unpredictably thinner there. This is what happens when my brush hits the canvas too hard and transforms the stroke into something unexpected but immediately inspiring; opening endless possibilities.

My newest collection is the reflection of this accidental line experience and study.
